CHAPTER SIXTEEN
ARRIVAL
At last, tired and weary, Matthew arrived at Salt Lake International Airport. The journey had been uneventful, allowing time for him to muster his thoughts, settle his mind on what he was about to do and say on meeting his paedophile contact. The whole idea scared him; this was unknown territory, a territory on which he had no desire to trespass. He had gone undercover on many occasions in his profession, it was necessary when seeking out industrial espionage or employee theft but the current situation was altogether different.
On the plane, he had read through two John Grishamâs, a writer whose work Matthew enjoyed immensely, and the same number of films. However, should anyone ask which novels heâd read or which films heâd watched he would not have been able to answer. Constant visions of the murky world he had somehow entered, invaded his mind throughout. Sleep had been a sheer impossibility, try as he may.
Posing as a novice in the paedophile world, would, he felt, allow him to divert uncomfortable conversations and to lend an excuse for not indulging in any activity should his contact have such lined up. He would hope to discover if the man was in the Organization and if there was any way in which he would be able to learn of the methods used to ensnare the children; places of meetings between members or friends. Perhaps he would not be a member, simply acting on a personal basis. Even so, it is likely he would have contact with others of the same perversion. Oh, what a filthy world he was entering into!
Matthewâs professionalism came to the fore, however, and he knew that his strength of mind was now gelling his thoughts and demeanour to the task ahead. He would appear relaxed and eager to learn whilst at the same time professing reticence to actually involving himself in any suggested activity. Yes. He would be okay. His back straightened and he held his head high; he was ready to look the world in the eye.
With some surprise, Matthew became aware that he had collected his luggage, passed through Customs security and was at the exit to the busy, bustling, airport. He had not given a thought to the beauty of the terminal or to the many different and interesting peoples populating it.
It was two in the afternoon and, as he walked out, the heat of the day hit him like a physical blow. It had been pleasant and warm back in England but here the difference in the heat and the dryness of it, was remarkable. He was glad that his meeting was not until ten the following morning; he needed to sleep and refresh himself. He hailed a cab to take him to the Hilton Salt Lake City Airport Hotel, where he had been booked into a single room for the week and, at $89 per night, he felt it was luxury at a bargain price.
Neither Matthew nor the friendly, chatty cab driver were aware of the sleek Mercedes taking the same route, some two hundred yards behind.
